LCN Quarterly Update
Special needs during winter when there is less seasonal work and with the cold weather, more assistance requests for housing related issues – heat, repair, rent assistance, are fielded by LCN.
Just two examples of personal experiences I had this winter: I met a man living in his truck because he became homeless, and a middle-aged mother with early teen daughters living with her who were homeless but had found a very basic cabin rental just before the polar vortex hit our area.
The needs continue, and you can help the efforts of Leelanau Christian Neighbors through your generous Second Mile giving support. Make use of LCN envelopes in your pew racks, and simply put “LCN” in the memo line if you are writing a check.
You may have read in the local news outlets that LCN and Samaritan’s Closet are joining together. This is very exciting in that these two well respected entities are now one. Joining forces means more community resources going to those in need. Both organizations go back a long way with LCUMC. We have been a part of LCN almost since its beginning, and Samaritan’s Closet was actually started through the efforts of members of this congregation.
SC currently operates out of tiny rental quarters in Lake Leelanau; joining together will allow for a new and larger building to be built on LCN property which will showcase more clothing, household goods, and furniture to help our neighbors. Both organizations had been closely tied together over the years with cross referrals, and for the last year or so, LCN has been distributing SC profits from sales through LCN’s neighbor assistance program.
LCN will in the very near future encompass not only the food pantry, baby pantry, blessings in a backpack, and Neighbor Assistance programs, but will also include a much more capable Samaritan’s Closet. Thank you for your continued support of Leelanau Christian Neighbors as well as Samaritan’s Closet!
